Sermon on the Train - The first Testament

The Sermon on the train lecture Series began with a lecture By Prof Anitra Nettleton, "meditations on the African Avantgarde". The Sermon took place on the train to Dube station, Soweto on Thursday the 19th of March. The Sermon, attended by wits students, staff and members of the public, took the form of a WSOA Diva talk with a lecture and a questions and answer session soon after. On the return trip to park station, a question and answer session for the artists (Molemo Moiloa and Nare Mokgotho) also took place.

The Sermon served as a critique of public access to information and the isolation and elitism often endemic in tertiary institution, particularly in relation to 'ordinary' members of the public. The Sermon sought to bring about an open platform for discourse and knowledge consumption, maintaining a high academic level that commuters on the train may or may not take something away from. The inclusion of public and community involvement/interaction seeks to encourage relational and dialogical exchange between the creative community and greater society.
